British Tours

These tours put the accent on the role of the commandos and the paratroopers in Sword beach sector. See how these elite units, who were within the very first soldiers to land by air or sea, prepared the terrain, fought bravely and tenaciously the Germans units. Then, they held non stop the whole right flank of the front for 75 days. By listening to the incredible stories and exploits of the commandos and paratroopers, we can only be fascinated by the professionalism and comraderie that existed in such groups of soldiers. Furthermore, the presence of French soldiers with the British commandos make this tour being « special » for French tour guides. But this is not all, the sector of Gold beach is covered as well: some of the most visited sites of the battle of Normandy are in this area. First of all, the landing on the beach itself is very interesting to focus on. The terrain (a long and continuous slope in the background, cliffs on the western side) and the quality of the defenders (half of them belonging to the German 352nd infantry division, the best unit defending the coast of Normandy) could have turn this beach landing into a failure. In the vicinity of Gold beach, one can discover the incredible artificial harbor, codenamed Mulberry B, which massive remains can still be seen today. The German coastal battery of Longues sur Mer, and several others a little bit hidden in the countryside, perfectly symbolise the gigantic construction of the « Atlantic wall ». These sites are known today to be parts of the highlight of the Battle of Normandy’s sites.

Some sites are mentionned as optional because they include either entrance fees (museums) or a choice made by the guest to spend more time elsewhere. Nervertheless, the visit of the museums listed, for a modest price, is recommended. Depending on your interest and time, you can choose between a half day, a full day, two full days tour or even more ! In order to have a better idea, check the sites details here !
